About this City

Journey to Roman Germany

Located at the head of the Mosel Valley near the Luxembourg border, Trier is Germany's oldest city, with a history that stretches back over 2,000 years. Founded by the Romans as Augusta Treverorum, it grew to become one of the largest cities in the Roman Empire and served for a time as the capital of the Western Roman Empire.

Roman Legacy

This incredible Roman legacy is still visible today in a stunning collection of well-preserved monuments, which together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The most famous of these is the Porta Nigra (Black Gate), a massive and imposing Roman city gate that is the best-preserved of its kind north of the Alps.

Imperial Monuments

Other impressive Roman ruins include the vast Imperial Baths (Kaiserthermen), the Basilica of Constantine, which was the emperor's throne room, and a large amphitheater. The Roman Bridge (Römerbrücke) still carries traffic across the Mosel River on foundations that date back to the 2nd century AD.

Religious Heritage

The Trier Cathedral is also a must-see; built on the foundations of a Roman palace, it is Germany's oldest bishop's church and houses a revered Christian relic, the Holy Tunic, which is said to be the robe worn by Jesus Christ. The cathedral complex includes the Gothic Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauenkirche).

Cultural Treasures

The Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Trier houses an exceptional collection of Roman artifacts, including the world's largest collection of Roman gold coins, found in the city in 1993. It provides fantastic context for the ancient sites scattered around the city.

Wine Capital

As the gateway to the Mosel wine region, Trier is also an excellent base for exploring the surrounding vineyards and picturesque wine villages. The city itself has a vibrant student population thanks to its university, creating a lively atmosphere in its historic center.
